Light cascades down porcelain ridges, distortions ebb and flow, intense hues emerge within translucent forms. These are the defining traits of Studio Tijmen Smeulders designs, revealed through the incidental nature of daily life. Since its founding in 2014, the Rotterdam-based studio has designed furniture, tableware, lighting, storage units and rugs. Each product is the culmination of a meticulous approach to design, based on enquiries into its various elements. A desire to challenge common perceptions drives these investigations, which play a key role in developing new perspectives on everyday products. 
&#38;nbsp;

Manufactured in an assortment of materials, the products share a common voice, finding a balance between familiarity and individuality without the need for decoration nor extravagance. They serve essential functions with clarity — benches for sitting, cups for drinking — while their sensorial nature ensures they maintain a valuable presence, even when not in use. 
&#38;nbsp;

Dialogue is fundamental to the studio’s ongoing collaborations with brands, craftspeople and factories around the world. Working directly with manufacturers allows it to explore the potential for constructive intervention and opportunities to push the boundaries of both design and production.
&#38;nbsp;

Examining common products right down to their essence, Studio Tijmen Smeulders pursues designs that challenge the conventions of daily life.&#38;nbsp;

	Background:Tijmen Smeulders graduated cum laude from the Department of Man and Well-being at Design Academy Eindhoven in December 2013. In addition to founding his studio, he works as a freelance designer for Aldo Bakker Studio and has worked with Formafantasma, Scholten &#38;amp; Baijings and Studio Wieki Somers. The studio is active across the fields of product and exhibition design.

	The Rijksmuseum has invited Aldo Bakker Studio to design the scenography for the exhibition titled Asian Bronze. This exhibition is a unique celebration of 4000 years of Asian bronze, with masterpieces from India, China, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Nepal and Korea. Ranging from prehistoric objects to contemporary artworks, and from everyday items to depictions of gods, each one is a display of astonishing skill and dazzling imagination.

UTSUÀ is a new porcelain brand from Arita – Japan, presenting a collection of contemporary tableware for everyday use. UTSUÀ is derived from utsuwa, the Japanese word meaning vessel or container. The corresponding Japanese character (器) is also used to express human capacity in terms of qualities such as tolerance or modesty. This highly anticipated collection is hybrid in nature, merging ancient Japanese craftwork with the most cutting-edge industrial machinery. All products are made using the finest local Amakusa clay, which remains one of the purest in Japan.


Decoration and porcelain are inseparable; their various arrangements can be traced to different eras. On the contrary, STS aimed to create patterns with the role of contributing to the overall function. The characteristic faceted relief is more than just decorative, improving ergonomics and tactility while strengthening the porcelain, preventing it from deforming during the firing process.


The town of Arita is located on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu and has been producing porcelain for over 400 years. UTSUÀ was initiated by Marubun Co., Ltd, an Arita-based trading company with more than 100 years of history, with design and creative direction by Tijmen Smeulders.

Galerie Vivid is proud to present the first solo exhibition of the Rotterdam-based designer Tijmen Smeulders. After graduating cum laude from Eindhoven Design Academy in December 2013, Tijmen Smeulders set up his studio in 2014. Smeulders’ principal aim is to offer new perspectives on products for everyday use; challenging our assumptions in terms of both materiality and functionality. His method of work typically involves a concentrated period of research into the fundamental elements of any given product. This means rigorously questioning and experimenting with an array of features including colour, texture, shape, material, size and function. Eventually, it transpires that there is always an inherent logic and reason for using these elements ― it’s about how they relate to, and mutually enhance, each other’s presence. It is always crucial to understand the material characteristics and the corresponding production methodology in order to reach a meaningful application. Smeulders’ collaborations with craftspeople and industrial producers are always an integral part of the process. This ongoing dialogue is a quest to share knowledge and push the boundaries of design.

	Three profiles slide into each other ― once together, they deliver the function of a bench. The vertical panel creates height and is positioned between two concave horizontals, which function as the foot and seat. The design allows for the use of a wide selection of materials and dimensions. In this instance, the long profiles and large surfaces provide ample space for showcasing the impressive veining of marble.&#38;nbsp;

MB01 &#38;amp; MB02 are commissioned by Galerie VIVID and have been shown at Design Miami/Basel, Object Rotterdam, among others. Production takes place in The Netherlands, with the CNC-milled parts finished manually.

	Jubako boxes first appeared in Japan during the Muromachi period (1333–1573). Initially used as a convenient way to serve meals, the boxes were later used to store food, particularly during the New Year holidays, when social and family obligations meant that there was little time to cook.


Developed in collaboration with Hataman Touen (Imari, Japan), this reinterpretation pushes the typology in a more contemporary direction. The dimensions, colours and textures are designed to allow for more widespread usage than traditional versions. The containers make use of specialised knowledge, using a wide variety of glazing techniques including spraying, brushing and dipping. This results in a range of contrasting surfaces and colours, corresponding to each of the three elements.
