nai010 publication Do It Ourselves

Polyester Bench is part of a new publication by nai010 publishers and design writer Jeroen Junte. In recent years, Dutch Design has sharply diverged from its previous course. A generation of designers trained in and shaped by the crisis years chose new values and starting points. The focus is now on inquisitive and collaborative makers who strive for social relevance and, if possible, impact. This ‘post-crisis generation’ is committed and optimistic, but also pragmatic and in possession of an eye for beauty. Humour and the almost inescapable concept have been exchanged for engagement and free research and irony and contemplative criticism for open-mindedness and the will to act. Craftsmanship and local production are examined as realistic alternatives to deadlocked systems of production and distribution.

European Launch UTSUÀ tableware

During Milan design week 2019 the European launch of UTSUÀ will take place at Spazio Rosanna Orlandi. During the past two years we have been working on a collection comprising eleven pieces including a carafe, a range of cups, bowls, plates and a single flower vase. All these products are made using the finest local Amakusa clay which remains one of the purest available in Japan. To have access to such a pure form of clay remains a true privelege as most ceramic ware derives from artificial mixes. This highly anticipated debut collection has been produced as a hybrid project, merging ancient Japanese craftwork with some of the most cutting-edge industrial machinery available.

Date: 8 – 14 April 2019
Time: 09:00–20:00
Location: Via Matteo Bandello, 14, 20123 Milano MI, Italy
